Marvel Cinematic Universe: Chronological Order Challenge

Welcome back, everyone!

I apologize for the late post, I usually write my posts beforehand and schedule them but I due to circumstances beyond my control (work), I wasn’t able to do so.

Today I wanted to talk about an interesting challenge my brother and I set for ourselves in 2016 around the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

I love Marvel, they have a such a great cast of characters and a fun and interesting universe. This is why I was so pleased when they started cranking out movies and TV shows about the characters I loved so much.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to keep up with the TV shows and movies due to my hectic work schedule and before I knew it there was behind on everything.

Instead of being upset, I saw this as a great opportunity to experience the universe in chronological order rather than production order.

This was also a great way to introduce my brother to the superheroes I grew up with and bond over the newest renditions of their adventures. We’ve been having a great time with the challenge and look forward to movie nights on the weekend.

I’ve been using the listing on CNET to guide me through the movies and the TV episodes and I’ve got to say that I love the continuity I get from watching them chronologically.

My aim is to catch up to production by the end of 2017 because I don’t want to pressure myself to binge-watch and this way I get to savour the universe even more.

Are you interested in this challenge or the MCU?

Let me know in the comments below.

Talk to you tomorrow!

When I heard that Netflix was making a TV series about Queen Elizabeth I was thrilled!

Queen Elizabeth and her family are the most well-known monarchs in the world and she is my favourite, possibly because she reminds me of my grandma.

While I am a huge fan of the monarchs I know next to nothing about their lives before Princess Diana. So I was even more excited when I was told it would start from her first days on the throne and each season would cover roughly ten years of her reign.

The series pulled me in and kept me engaged by normalizing the monarchs enough to make me feel emotionally connected to them and picking such interesting portions of her reign to highlight.

The actors were amazing! Not only did they look like the persons they were depicting (some of them scarily so) but they were also able to capture the nuances of these characters so that they felt real and as if you really knew them.

I really enjoyed the storylines as they showed that the monarchs and the people in power are not as perfect as they would like to seem. They have insecurities, they make bad decisions and have issues just like the rest of us.

I liked that they didn’t shy away from showing Phillip handling his new role in the backseat, her struggle to balance being his wife as well as his queen, the treatment of the family by her uncle and vice versa or the power struggle between her and Margaret.

I also really enjoyed Margaret and Peter’s story line and Elizabeth’s struggle as she tries to balance being a sister and a queen. Another interesting story line was her relationship with Winston Churchill and his struggle with stepping down and relinquishing his power.

Finally, can we talk about King George’s death? I knew it was coming but those scenes after he died had me tearing up. The show did a wonderful job capturing the grief of the family, the castle and the country in those scenes and throughout the rest of the series.

I think this series had a great start and I cannot wait to see what they have lined up for season two.

Have you watched The Crown?

Did you like it? What are your favourite story lines?

Book Clubs: 2017

I have always loved the idea of a book club. book_club_logo1

Unfortunately, I have never been lucky enough to be a part of a face to face one.

Luckily for me, we have the Internet where book clubs come alive and I can be a part of a great community of book lovers.

Today, I want to introduce you to the book clubs that I will a part of this year.

I have only selected three because I don’t want to overreach and end up in another reading slump.

  1. The Classic Book-a-Month Club
    • This book club is centred around reading one classic each month for the entire year.
    • I love classics, however, I tend to find them daunting and I always need a little push to start them so I think this book club will be great for me.
  2. The Paper & Glam Book Club
    • This book club aims to diversify the participant’s reading by incorporating classics, fiction, non-fiction, poems, short stories and tomes into the recommended list of books.
    • I’m always looking for a way to diversify my reading so I thought this would be the perfect book club for me.
  3. The Perustopia Book Club
    • This book club is founded by two of my favourite Booktubers, Regan from PeruseProject and Sasha from ABookuTopia. They pick a book a month, normally a new YA, fantasy based book and then have a live show at the end of the month to discuss their thoughts.
    • I love these two and they always have such great recommendations so I’m super excited to actively participate in this book club this year. Also they usually pick newer books which will help me read some new titles while I knock out some older ones on my TBR this year.

Are you a fan of book clubs?

Will you be joining any this year?

If so, which ones? I would love to know!

Let me know in the comments below.

See you tomorrow and happy reading!

Book Challenges: 2017

Another year, another set of book challenges!6d087b37f731c50a81b8e0ee6d1e9a82

For the past couple years the only book challenge I have taken on is the 50 books in a year challenge. This was because I was feeling a bit boxed in by the challenges I was taking on and I didn’t feel like I could really read whatever I wanted.

This year I plan to revive my love of book challenges by picking challenges that excite me and that I really want to be a part of.

To ensure I don’t get bogged down in numbers I’m choosing to make each challenge cross count, this way one book can count for all the challenges.

  1. 2017 Popsugar Ultimate Reading Challenge
    • This challenge runs from January 1st to December 31st and has 40 book prompts to help to diversify your reading. There is an advanced version of the challenge that has 52 book prompts but I will be sticking with the original challenge this year.
    • This is a challenge I’ve always wanted to take on but I never really remember about until the middle of the year and then I figure it’s too late.  It is a bit ambitious however there is a Goodreads group “Ultimate Popsugar Reading Challenge” that is there to help make the challenge a bit easier and more fun by offering book recommendations and group discussion.
  2. The Chronological Sherlock Holmes Challenge
    • This challenge runs from January 2017 to April 2018 and aims to take us through all the Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels in chronological order. There is a recommended reading schedule that has you reading a short story over the course of a week and a novel over the course of three weeks.
    • I love Sherlock Holmes and I have been meaning to read the stories for years. This is the perfect opportunity to complete this goal in a logical way without feeling pressured or rushed.
  3. The “What Would Jane Do?” Challenge
    • This challenge runs from January 1st to December 31st and aims to have the participant read and watch as many Jane Austen and Jane Austen inspired books and movies that they want. There are many different levels to this challenge, however, I will be undertaking the Official Challenge which is to read and watch 8 or more books and movies by or inspired by Ms Austen.
    • I love Jane Austen and I am just dying to read more of her books. I think this challenge will push me to pick up some of her novels that I haven’t read and revisit the ones that I love.
  4. 2017 Monthly Motif Reading Challenge
    • This challenge runs from January 1st to December 31st and has 12 monthly prompts for you to follow.
    • I really love the prompts, I think they are super fun and I should have a blast trying to read books that match.
  5. Harry Potter Challenge
    • This is a home made challenge that will run from January 1st to December 31st and is simply to reread and rewatch the Harry Potter books and movies this year.
    • I LOVE Harry Potter, it is one of the few series that I fan girl over and it is the one I fan girl over the hardest. It is such a great story with such amazing characters. I have never reread it and it is something that I have been meaning to do for years.

Are you doing any book challenges this year?

If so, which ones? I would love to know!

See you tomorrow and happy reading!

Happy New Years!

Happy New Year Everyone!!!

2016 was a very mixed year for me and so I’m super happy it’s over.

That being said I’ve always loved the New Year because of the season of change it brings with it.

A new year is a perfect time to reevaluate and make changes you’ve been meaning to make for years.

I have done some soul searching and I have come up with a few resolutions that I think I will be able to stick to this year.

  1. I must cook more in 2017.
    • I love cooking in theory but I’m also pretty tired when I get home and so I tend to not cook as much. My aim is to cook breakfast and lunch a couple times a week, every week.
  2. I must take better care of myself.
    • Being busy is a blessing but it also makes you less aware of the damage that you are doing to yourself. I had this on my new year’s resolution list way back in 2011 and I became a better person because of it but as I moved into the working world I slacked off on the habits I had created. So to ensure that I stay healthy and happy for years to come I will be taking on the following challenges.
      • Eating healthier
        • I’ve really slacked off on eating healthier and have found myself eating a lot of take out and junk food simply because it’s easier and I’m tired but I think with me aiming to cook more I will be able to eat healthier this year.
      • Exercising more
        • I walk a lot and that is something I’m very proud of but I don’t actually have an exercise regime to help me lose weight and stay healthy and that is what I plan to implement this year with the help of the app Nike + Training.
      • Taking care of my skin
        • I have really been slacking on moisturizing my skin or doing much more than simply keeping it clean. As a result, my skin isn’t as soft and luscious as it was before. My aim is to return to the skin care routine that has served me so well in the past to ensure my skin doesn’t age faster than me.
      • Taking care of my hair
        • I have always had thick hair that can withstand a lot of neglect but I want to ensure that my hair is super healthy so that it can grow and be really strong.
      • Putting more effort into my appearance.
        • I’m pretty laid back about my appearance, I like simple and comfortable over glamorous however I do like how confident and pretty I feel when I put a little effort in. As a result, I aim to glam up my comfort clothes just a bit to ensure that I feel confident and amazing every day.
      • Having a better work/life balance.
        • Since I entered the working world roughly 5 years ago I have been a full on workaholic. When I’m not at work, I help out at my parent’s store or I’m home on my laptop catching up on work I have to do. I rarely go out or do anything just for fun and I really want to change that. I need to reconnect with my friends and family and just enjoy life a little more.
  3. I must read at least 50 books.
    • I love reading and this is my standard goal each year however in 2016 I had a really tough time keeping this goal, so much in fact that I lowered it to 20 books. I fell into one of the worst reading slumps I have ever had where I didn’t read a book for months at a time. In the latter part of the year I picked up A Game of Thrones and it has really helped to get me back into the reading groove. So this year I am setting my goal at 50 to ensure that I keep up the momentum.
  4. I must be more organized.
    • I pride myself on being organized however long days in the office and being a workaholic is not conducive to being super organized at home. I slack off and just relax most days when I’m home and so my nicely thought out processes do not get followed. My aim is to keep my room super organized and running like a nicely oiled machine so that I don’t have to do big projects every couple weeks to get myself back on track.
  5. I must save more.
    • In 2016 I really stepped up my saving game and put some processes in place to ensure that in a couple years I will be debt free and ready to move out of my parents’ house. For this to happen though I do need to be more consistent when saving. While I saved a lot last year I didn’t put away as much as I should have as I didn’t put savings first. So this year my plan is to treat my savings account as a bill which has to be paid regardless of what’s going on. This is the only way I can ensure that I don’t make bad financial decisions and spend my savings.

Are you making new year resolutions this year?

If so, what are they?

Let me know in the comments below.

I wish for you and yours a wonderful and prosperous 2017.

See you tomorrow!
